Windy With a Chance of Sun

The winds today over our city are outlandish! Howling! Gusting! Taking down tree limbs and forcing off power to homes all over the area!

It’s been like this all day! And perhaps I’ve been situated smack in the middle of this stay at home order a few days too long, but I have rather marveled at the weather!

My office window is cracked. Even with it closed I could hear the wind chimes, furiously clanging and frantically tinkling to endure the force that pushed them so furiously toward fulfilling their sole purpose!

Clang, clang. Ding, ding. Tinkle, twinkle, turn and clap. It’s like they’re singing a chorus to the wind! They sound as if some primal place within is being freed to shout out and show off!

Then it’s calm. The wind stops. The sun beams. And the chimes rest. Catching their breath for the next blast — the next stanza of their songs of praise!

The world feels very much like this now. Not just out the window of my office but everywhere. The nitrogen dioxide is so diminished from a world wide ban on driving, flying, producing fuel, air pollution has lessened.

City dwellers report they can now hear birds singing and other sounds previously muffled by all the noise of vehicles and daily living!

None of this will probably be long-lived. Once mankind is “allowed” to return to “normal life” all the positives will probably be diminished. Nature will go back to battling the unrelenting assault humans are making upon it

But I can’t help but think, that one day the history books will report, that for a few months, in the year 2020, the winds of change blew over the earth. And the sun came out! And we looked up — and we looked down — and we looked at each other. We had conversations and read books and went for walks.

I hope I will remember to turn the page back to this time in the history book for many years to come. I don’t want to forget how nice it was to sit at my desk and listen to the wind chimes. And watch the tree limbs twisting. And be delighted by the sun streaking through.
