The Bird Feeder is Empty

As I looked out the kitchen window this morning I realized the bird feeder was empty. The birds get quite put out when that happens! So many birds have come to rely on that bird feeder:

— a mated pair of blue jay

— a mated pair of cardinals

— a mated pair of woodpeckers(!)

— dozens of sparrows

Not to mention the fat, spoiled squirrels!

But none of them NEED the feed in the feeder! It makes their lives easier. But they don’t really need it! They are endowed the with the skills, abilities, instincts to forage for bugs and seeds, and everything else they need. And our neighborhood offers an abundance of resources for them to have everything they need — full of lush lawns, large trees, bushes, flowers, plants and water. So they don’t need the seed in the bird feeder. But they’re not happy! They come and sit on the deck rail and peck around some of the potted plants on the deck and fly off indignantly.

Driving to work I started thinking about how we are like those birds! We get used to having things go a certain way. We have a need met without much thought or effort on our part. Then, when whatever is meeting that need goes away — even temporarily — we start to panic! And we feel abandoned and disappointed. But God doesn’t ever leave us alone!

Sometimes when we’re in a season when we need extra support and encouragement and sustenance, He provides a means for all of that. But then, when we get stronger, when we’ve grown in our faith, in our personal fortitude, in our ability; when we’ve evolved as a human being, we don’t necessarily need those supports any more and so they’re removed. And we don’t like it! Oh my goodness! What do you mean . . . What happened . . . Oh my gosh! Now I have to . . .

We’re not unlike those crazy birds! They don’t need the bird seed but they like not having to work too hard for it. They don’t need it, just like we don’t need the extra support provided. But we like it and we get used to it. And we’re not happy to have it taken away. But eventually we have to fly on our own! We’re ready! God brought us here! He’s not going to leave us helpless.

Just fly!
