Stop. Think. Pray. Rest. 1% More

Recited this verse of a hymn written by Lynn DeShazzo on my drive into work this morning:

Lord, You are more precious than silver;
Lord, You are more costly than gold;
Lord, You are more beautiful than diamonds;
And nothing I desire compares with You.

I actually discovered the additional, multiple verses to the song when I searched for the song writer. They are equally as beautiful, and I intend to learn them all.

On my 1% journey I’ve found myself restless quite often. Maybe impatient is a better word? Or more likely unsettled describes it! Some nights it takes a long time to quiet my mind and fall asleep when I go to bed. Some mornings, I awaken with a “holy urgency” to get on with all God is calling me to do. Every once in a while, I give myself permission to just rest — in Him. I need to THAT 1% more often — probably way more often than that!

I do some of my “best” thinking and praying in the car. I turn off the radio and tune in to the clouds, the traffic, the river as I cross the bridge. The water level on the dam is often a corollary to where I am in my life — sometimes over-washing the dam vs. allowing itself to be restrained and controlled by the barrier. This morning I realized that often barriers are put in place to guard/protect us. Not necessarily from harm, or even from evil. Rather they are erected to protect us from ourselves, and our own idle whims, running ahead of God and perhaps pursuing some “less than” plan than what God has in mind for us.

So this morning, I reminded myself — and declared to my God — that there is absolutely nothing in this world I value, prize or desire more than to walk in His plan for my life. His perfect plan. His plan that defies all reason or logic or imagination. His plan far surpasses anything my own mind could fathom or think up.

Today I am resting in one of the “new” verses of the hymn I learned:

Lord, Your light is shining within us;
Lord, Your light drives darkness away.
Lord, Your light is guiding us onwards,
Preparing us for the coming wedding day.

I encourage you to explore this train of thought by reading Psalm 19.
