Midwinter and Blue Skies

I love the outdoors. I love nature! So, the sunshiny weather today, after what feels like months of alternating cold, bitter days and gray rainy days, was a welcome respite.

I love the ocean — but I’m not a scuba diver. I’m more a stroll on the beach and sit on the porch at an oceanfront hotel kind of ocean person. I would drive 3 hours just to stand on the boardwalk and breathe is the salty ocean mist, taste the salt on my lips, then walk down to the tide line and let the water lap my toes. A commentary on how we live I think: presenting the best face possible, while holding back the underlying churning of everyday life.

“To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork” (Psalm 19:1 ESV).

“More than the sounds of many waters,
Than the mighty breakers of the sea,
The Lord on high is mighty” (Psalm 93:4 ASV).

Athletes and “outdoor types” may be thinking that I’m misguided. I’m an “outside” person, not an outdoors person! I love nature. The beauty of every bit of it is incredible and sparks in me both calm and creativity.

Everything in creation is connected! The Native Americans believe all life is holy and all life is one. I believe that too. God created nature to be enjoyed! When we appreciate it, relish it, wrap ourselves in it, we’re really praising him!

“On the glorious splendor of your majesty, and on your wondrous works, I will meditate” (Psalm 145:5 ESV).

There is scientific evidence that being outdoors has physical, mental, emotional benefits, too. God really does know what He’s doing!
