I’m Getting Reacquainted With Jesus

I’m getting reacquainted with Jesus these days. It’s like a friendship that took us in different directions in life then we’re reunited. It’s not the easy reunion like that with some high school and college friends after so many years.

I don’t lounge comfortably on Jesus’ porch and marvel at how the friendship picks up right where it left off. I don’t sigh and chuckle at the characters we knew and about where life has landed us. I don’t even reluctantly part company, wishing we had longer together, promising to stay in touch now that we’ve reconnected!

It’s strained and awkward. I don’t know where to sit and I don’t know what to say! I don’t know what to ask him, or ask him for. I want everything the way it was. The way it was before. But I know it never can be. So I must decide where to go from here!

I believe if I continue to pursue Him, He will allow me to do so. He woos me still, in spite of my inattention and surliness. And I want to get to know him again. I’m working on it . . . really I am.

I go back to visit Him each morning with my coffee, in the quiet, predawn hours of the day. They are my “best” hours — before the news, before what to wear to work, before to do lists and schedules overtake me. It brings to mind the way my grand daughter sits on the floor with a game or activity, looks up at me as she pats the floor — a silent, sweet bidding to come . . . sit with me . . . give me your time and attention.

Jesus is doing some deep work in me! It’s as if He just waited for the opening to “intrude” once more into my heart. And it is an intrusion — though gentle, it is deliberate and intentional. And I’m trying very hard to keep the door open, to step out a little more each day and to be willing to keep moving toward His perfect plan and vision for my life.
