If Your Dreams Don’t Scare You
What the heck?! I remember the first time I worked on a dream board. I selected some things that I had never really imagined I would be able to do until that exercise.
And for me . . . they were HUGE! However my coach at the time said, “You need to dream much bigger than that!” No explanation of why. No “good job.” No letting me settle for “lesser dreams.” I actually got a little discouraged because I had felt I really stretched myself!
That was several years ago. I was in an MLM then, and the purpose of the exercise was to help me (us) remember why we were working so hard (to sell products and recruit new team members).
The problem with this philosophy is that too many people get too scared to really go after their dreams! We don’t willingly, intentionally go after a dream that scares us do we? Challenges us, yes! Scare us? Probably not!
So how do we move from being challenged to “doing it scared?” By accepting the first challenge! What I learned is that success breeds confidence! Doing that first thing, gives me a little more confidence/courage to tackle the next thing. Do. Rinse. Repeat. Over time, fear stops determining what goals we set — beyond the truth it is a fact of life. Fear becomes transformational and motivational when we use it as a beacon for “what’s next.”
When we get that “pit of the stomach” internal message, when our brains start to swirl, when our hearts start beating a little faster: Go For It! That’s how we know! Call it maturity, experience, whatever you want. Doing builds confidence. “Do It Scared” becomes a way of living — except the fear lessens each time! I’m still doing it scared. But each time I “do it” I get a little braver! And I’m learning to dream bigger and bigger!
My dreams these days are immense, vast, crazy! And it’s exhilarating! But they started with that first step. Dream. Do. Celebrate. Dream. Do. Celebrate. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Fearlessly!
