Holy Urgency

At lunch the other day I coined this phrase — or at least spoke it to a best friend while we ate and talked — and talked, and talked.

We were talking about how our “dream boards” for 2020 were already full and we were pushing ideas, projects, dreams into calendar year 2021 and beyond. We were both almost taken aback at our boldness and how we’ve been developing a holy urgency to do all that God is placing on our hearts.

I related thast phrase to Jesus, himself. I wondered if the human/man Jesus ever experienced that combination of restlessness/ weariness/ longing / hopelessness. He knew he only had three years to accomplish His mission here on earth! The human/man Jesus certainly felt there was no way he could humanly tell the Good News of his purpose for being.

The human/man, Jesus, though also divine, must have, from time to time, allowed his sense of holy urgency to creep in, in moments when he forgot that God’s plan would last far longer than Jesus could even imagine! More than 2,000 years later, the story is still being told and shared and retold and clung to and studied and told again!

My holy urgency is tied so strongly to what I call “the years between.” In the Bible they could be equated to the years the locust has eaten. My world started to collapse under my feet in the years between writing my two books. Every area of my life “took a hit” that culminated with grief over the death of my mom and then, more recentlly, that of a sweet friend — my own age.

But to be honest, there were so many years I didn’t spend wisely, thinking I would always have next year, and the year after! And life gets busy. Life gets complicated. Our faith often, though well-versed and informed, isn’t always practiced and applied enough to sustain us. Throughout those years between, my faith was tested! While I failed the test repeatedly, God never did! He remained true to His word. He never left me abandoned.

Now that he’s brought me “through the waters,” I stand by His promise that,“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, Nor shall the flame scorch you” (Isaiah 43:2 NKJV).

I am challenged to weigh that urgency with pacing myself, physically, mentally, emotionally. The former me would at this very moment either be trying to figure out how to “fit it all in” now or sitting, like a deer in the headlights, not even comprehending how I should just start — something — anything! But I am doing it! It requires prayer — daily — rather hourly!

Obedience is tricky thing. It requires not only that we listen to God’s prompting, but that we rest often in His presence. God charts our course. It’s our task to follow the map with courage, obedience, intention. We are the light of the world.

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16 ESV).

I’m not nearly up to the task on my own. But I am confident in in the One who charts my path! I believe He has equipped me. I hope I am faithful to the task.
