NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER — BE STILL

When David tells us God wants us to “Be still” in Psalm 46, we should not be mistaken: God doesn’t mean, don’t talk during the TV show or don’t talk while scrolling through social media. He doesn’t even mean don’t respond when someone says something hurtful to you, or cuts you off in traffic. Nor is He referring to tiptoeing around the house late at night so you don’t wake anyone up.

“He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth”” (Psalm 46:10)

David has spent countless nights tending his flocks in solitude and peace, but for the snores and gentle bleats of sleepy sheep. He’s spent endless nights gazing at the sky, noting the passing seasons by the position of each constellation. He no doubt sometimes feels overcome by God’s promises: David’s faith unwavering. His prose stunningly beautiful.

He has seen the beauty of God’s world and “hears with his heart” when God calls out to him. Awe-struck in that stillness, he sees all that God has done and recognizes He is certainly more than worthy of exaltation!

How all-too-easy it is for me to brush over the simple wonders — and magnificent creations of God? When am I intentional about being still and resting in His presence, listening for the words He longs to speak into my own heart?

On this National Day of Prayer, I began my day in stillness, and am committed to cultivate stillness throughout my day, to better hear God calling out to me in that “still small voice” that is all too often drowned out by the world.

I’ll be focusing on what He reveals to me as I strive to silent my mind for a few moments each hour — my small offering of thanks for His unspeakably precious gift.
