A Day Like Any Other Day
As I’m typing this post, the new year has been in force for about 8 hours in my part of the world. I awoke to a cold, sunny first morning of the new year. Honestly, I was glad to remember the theme for this post when I awoke this morning, as I thought of it while I was falling asleep — a full 3 hours beyond my normal bedtime due to the celebration of friendship with neighbors on the last day of 2019.
The thought that crossed my mind is that January 1 is not a day that holds any special kind of magic. It’s not different than December 31 or for that matter, any other day in the year.
So many of us hang our hat on this day as “the day” that will be the beginning of something new, better, bigger! And there’s nothing wrong with that! You have to start new, better, bigger sometime, right? But let’s remember this: we worship a God of new beginnings! Every day is an opportunity to improve! Every moment is a chance to begin again. Every second is precious and might be “the second” when everything changes.
The God of new beginnings is also the God of second chances — and third, and forth — and on into infinity! That’s reassuring to me as statistics show that by January 12, most of us will have abandoned our New Year’s resolutions!
But there has to be a starting point, right? Everything new, better, bigger has to begin somewhere, sometime. So today is as good a day as any! I have high hopes and big dreams for the new decade the world has just entered. I have ardent prayers I’ll be lifting. I have big plans to launch some new, better, bigger ways to help the world find faith, grace, hope, healing!
It’s exciting and daunting! My “word” for 2020 is “flourish.” I hope God’s plans for me flourish in a dry and thirsty world! If I can make one person’s day brighter, ease one person’s sadness, lift up one person’s heart, nourish one person’s dream, then I will consider my year a success.
“But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:21–23).
